Read MoreIndowestern designs are the perfect blend of contemporary and traditional fashion. Every season, I see South Asian designers push the envelope on what Indowestern fashion really looks like, and I simply can’t get enough. Here are some of my favorite designers that already have a cult-following, or will really soon!
Gaurav Gupta is a couture designer exploring the intersection between fashion and surrealism whose designs have been sweeping the red carpet and beyond! Earlier this year, he had his debut at Paris Couture Week, earning global recognition for his stunning ensembles which can only be described as ‘art brought to life’ — followed by a viral red carpet moment with singer and artist Cardi B. Most recently, his designs were worn by Beyonce during her historic Club Renaissance tour.
Whimsical, colorful, and absolutely mesmerizing, Papa Don’t Preach by Shubhika’s signature style can be spotted from a mile away. In a world that’s shying away from bold colors and embracing more muted palettes, PDP is a breath of fresh air! Seen on stars like Paris Hilton, Alia Bhatt and Kiara Advani, Papa Don’t Preach modernizes the maximalist aesthetic of traditional South Asian fashion with brighter colors and edgy accents.
Amit Aggarwal’s designs are what I like to describe as futuristic Indian fashion. More than just modernizing traditional silhouettes, Amit Aggarwal’s take on Indowestern fashion features larger-than-life structured lehengas and saris created with unique fabrics made from recycled material that transport you fifty years into the future. John Legend & Raja Kumari most recently donned Amit Aggarwal at their concert in Mumbai.
Masaba Gupta’s modern silhouettes were probably my first time falling in love with Indowestern fashion. The OG queen of bold, artistic prints coupled with comfortable fabric and stunning, yet practical silhouettes — Masaba truly shaped what modern Indian fashion looked like to me. And she’s still making waves with her recent bridal and RaniCore collections.
World renowned designer, Payal Singhal is another designer who really pioneered the Indowestern and Global Indian fashion space. She was one of the first big-name Indian designers that felt accessible to the diaspora community in New York, and a personal favorite of mine because her pieces were the first I ever shot in as I began my journey!
Kamaali Couture creates intricate monochromatic pieces that exude elegance and style. The pieces easy to wear, and each silhouette is more unique than the last!
Creator of the iconic high-slit drape sari, Label D has been the go-to designer for celebs and A-listers who are down to show some skin! Label D pieces are designed to flatter your body and make you feel your best. I did a stunning shoot in Udaipur in my favorite Label D pieces and it may be one of my favorite shoots to date.
Hong Kong-based brand, Jinashili creates some of the most unique and innovative designs I’ve seen in the South Asian fashion industry that can be worn seamlessly to both South Asian and non-South Asian events. One of my favorite lehengas of all time is a JinaShili design!
Rosé has quickly become one of my favorite up and coming designers! I’ve worn two of her pre-pleated saris and keep reaching back for them!
Another designer I keep reaching for is Aashima Behl. With an incredible selection and range of designs, you’ll be able to find a statement piece for every occasion.
Harleen Kaur is one of the first US-based designers to open her own showroom in NYC! I’ve been lucky enough to wear her pieces multiple times over the years, and I’ve always gotten so many compliments.
Wedding shopping doesn’t have to be stressful. If you’re wedding shopping in North America, here are my favorite Desi Bridal shops to find the Indian wedding outfit of your dreams!
